Mayo Gaels 0-7 Kilmaine 3-15

Our intermediate team were thought a lesson in fitness and football skills by a slick Kilmaine team in Abbey Park on Sunday afternoon. Apart from the first ten minutes Kilmaine were always in control of this one sided affair. The Gaels started brightly registering the first score of the game through a Danny Burke free after four minutes. Kilmaine responded with a point from play and another from a free. Danny Burke leveled the game on the ninth minute with a well take free. Kilmaine restored their lead with a point from play. Cathal Vahey pulled off a fine save from Brian Maloney after eleven minutes. Kilmaine stretched their lead with two further points. Mallie Byrne narrowed the gap with a free after good work by Danny Burke. The killer score of the half came after twenty minutes when Paul Doherty was quickest to react when his initial shot hit the crossbar. They added three other points before halftime with just a single Mallie Byrne point from play. The half time score was 0-4 to 1-9.

The game was effectively ended as a competitive affair in the first minute of the second half when Kilmaine scored their second goal to leave them eleven points clear. Niall Brett kicked a good point from play before Kilmaine made their midfield dominance count with three further points. A Danny Burke free offered some respite for the Gaels but this was brief as Kilmaine added two more points from play. Danny Burke landed another free for the last Gaels score of the day. Kilmaine finished strongly adding a goal and a point to leave the final score 0-7 to 3-15.
