The intermediate team kicked off their season in Kilmaine on Sunday, defeating the home side by 1-10 to 0-9, in a lively O’Meara Cup encounter. This was a hard fought game between two sides missing a number of regulars. Kilmaine led by 0-5 to 0-4 at half time but the games crucial score came with ten minutes remaining, when Richie Kilkenny showing great awareness, flicked a Liam Kearns free kick to the net, to put Davitts in front for the first time in the match.
Points by Aidan McTigue, Carlos O Gara, David McDonagh and Liam Kearns sealed the win for Davitts, whose superior fitness was the difference between the two sides. Davitts had excellent performances from James Cummins, up to his withdrawal through injury, Michael Ronayne, Colm Roche, impressive midfielders Colm Boyle and Paul Carey, Liam Kearns and second half substitute, the wily David McDonagh.
