Ireland’s U18’s ended their EuroHockey Youth Championships in fifth place, courtesy of their 3-2 win over Russia in the play-off pool.
Only a win would see Ireland maintain their place in the A Division. This lead to a frenetic opening which saw the scoreboard up to 2-2 within eight minutes, with goals scored by captain, Brenda Flannery & team-mate Chloe Watkins. A tense, end-to-end battle followed thereafter. The slalemate was eventually broken three minutes from time when Katie Codyre scored the winner.
Coach Mary Logue said afterwards: ‘I am delighted to win today after the disappointment of yesterday’s defeat to Lithuania. The girls showed tremendous character to get the win we needed to secure 5th position and the A Division for 2011.”
