Junior & U21 Reports

November 8, 2018

We had two championship games in two days and with nine players on both the
junior and under 21 sides it was fairly hectic. We won the first round of
the East Cork JBHC against Lisgoold by six points in Caherlag on Sunday
night. On Tuesday night at the same venue we led Aghada by 4 points with
time up. In five and a half minutes of added time however Aghada scored a
goal and a point to level.

Junior B hurling.
Fielding a mixture of experienced players along with minor and U-21 players
we took on Lisgoold’s first team in Round 1 of the East Cork Junior ‘B’
Hurling Championship in Caherlag on Sunday evening last. Two pointed frees
from Pat Cotter and Shane Kearney gave us a perfect start. Lisgoold levelled
after 10 minutes but further points from Alan O’Keeffe and Stephen Pratt saw
us 0-4 to 0-2 ahead after 20 minutes. Lisgoold finished the half stronger
with 4 unanswered points to lead at the break 0-6 to 0-4. A long range point
from Mike Hogan reduced the deficit after half time. Lisgoold restored their
two point lead with a pointed free. After this our lads increased the tempo
of the game in all sectors. The defence tightened up and Mike Hogan and
Shane Kearney dominated mid-field. Further points from Mike and Pat Cotter
(a free) saw the teams level at 7 points apiece. A goal direct from a free
by Pat Cotter gave us a three point lead. We finished very strongly. Further
points from Mike and Pat Cotter (2) gave us a 1-10 to 0-7 lead with five
minutes to go. Lisgoold tried hard for goals in the closing minutes but our
backline held out and we won by a six point margin 1-10 to 0-7. This was a
tough physical game and was a good win for our second team. They now face
either Erins Own or Midleton in the quarter final of this championship. This
game is down for weekend of July 28th/29th but may be brought forward.

U-21 Hurling
It was back to Caherlag on Tuesday night for a first round game against
Aghada in the U-21 Hurling Championship. This was a very even game with
points being swapped regularly in the first half. Early scores from Michael
Collins and Alan O’Keeffe cancelled out Aghada’s first two points. Further
points from Michael Collins (3) and Daniel Dooley saw us leading 0-6 to 0-4
after 22 minutes. After this however Aghada came more into the game and five
unanswered points saw them leading 0-9 to 0-6 at the break. Michael Collins
pointed a ’65 on the resumption but Aghada replied with a point. Another
Michael Collins free was followed by a goal from Daniel Dooley to put us
ahead 1-8 to 0-10. Aghada then got two points to give them a one point lead.
With Liam Forde dominating at the back our lads thundered into the game and
points from Michael Collins (2), Kieran Collins and Alan O’Keeffe saw us
leading by 1-12 to 0-12. Alan O’Keeffe and Michael Collins both scored a
point each to put us ahead by 1-14 to 0-12. In the 29th minute of the second
half Aghada had a point to make it 1-14 to 0-13. A four point lead going
into injury time looked an adequate margin. However a total of five and a
half minutes of injury time was played. Aghada got a goal and then a
leveling point. They attacked once more looking for a winner but much to our
relief we were awarded a free out and shortly after the final whistle went.
