Cumann Na mBunscol Final Replay

Edenderry………0-09
Portarlington……3-01

Last Saturday Edenderry Boys National School lost by a single point to St Patrick’s of Portarlington on a scoreline of 3-01 to 0-09. Over the hour Edenderry played much the better football as shown in the scoreline with their nine scores to Portarlington’s four. Edenderry also hit the crossbar in the first half, while the Portarlington goalkeeper made a superb save from Stephen Osborne in the second half.

Cian Farrell opened the scoring for Edenderry with an excellent point. But that lead didn’t last long as Portarlington scored a goal from a free which they won from their first attack of the game. Cian Farrell responded with a point from a free, before Portarlington scored a great point from play. Edenderry nearly took the lead when a long ball was sent in to Stevie Osborne who cleverly fisted the ball first time, but he was unlucky to see his effort rebound off the crossbar. However from Edenderry’s next attack they scored a point when a good Peter McNamara shot was tipped over the bar by the Portarlington goalie. Edenderry levelled the scoring when Cian Farrell won possession and sold a wonderful dummy to a Portarlington defender before sending the ball over the bar. Edenderry took the lead for the first time just before the break when Conor Farrell sent over a free, awarded for a foul on Jack Foran.

Halftime, Edenderry 0-05 Portarlington 1-01.

Immediately after the restart Portarlington regained the lead with another goal directly from a free. Edenderry very nearly cancelled out that score when Stevie Osborne beat the last defender, and raced towards goals and hit a good shot, but unfortunately for him the Portarlington gaolie got down brilliantly to make a great save. Portarlington then got their last score of the game when they scored a very good goal to go five points clear. Cian Farrell pulled a point back for Edenderry from a free, before Shane Cummins was introduced into the action for Jack Foran. Conor Farrell then scored his second point of the game from a free to reduce Portarlington’s lead to three points. Conor Groome scored an excellent point from play off his left boot, before Cian Farrell reduced the lead down to a solitary point with a good score from a free. With minutes remaining Edenderry tried hard to get the levelling point, but sadly it didn’t happen. With the last attack of the game Portarlington nearly grabbed their fourth goal, as Edenderry had pushed forward. But the alert Jason McNamee made an excellent save to deny Portarlington.

Congratulations to all the Edenderry players for reaching yet another final. All the team played exceptionally well, and they deserved more from this game, but it was not to be. On another note, it was a very sad to see a section of adults from Portarlington booing the Edenderry boys as they entered the field before the game had even begun!

Team: Jason McNamee; Conor Groome (0-1), Aaron Holt; Callum Roche, Darren Quinn, Peter McNamara (0-1); Lee Hyland, Andrew Moloney; Cian Farrell (0-5), Eoin Farrell, Jack Foran; Stephen Osborne, Conor Farrell (0-2).

Substitutes: Shane Cummins, Oisin O’Grady, Matthew Beatty, Alex Dinkin, Donie Groome, Jordan Farrell, Cathal Farrell, Patrick Rickard, Eoin O’Reilly, Brendan Lynch.

Indoor Hurling Commences

Last Thursday evening indoor hurling training for 2010 commenced for the U12s & U14s (children born in 1996, ’97, ’98 and ’99). In an effort to maintain the fantastic work done over the last couple of years with these players, it was decided to extend the indoor hurling programme to these age groups.

There were many new drills introduced to their training sessions with the use of new equipment such as ‘The Rebounder’. This piece of equipment is a 3ft x 4ft aluminium frame with a spring loaded net, which provides excellent target practice for children, and it also improves the their catching and control, as the Sliothar returns to each player at their own pace.

It is aimed to have these sessions in fun and safe environment, as the sessions are supervised by experienced qualified coaches. Indoor hurls and helmets are provided on the night, although the club recommends that in time, each hurler would have their helmet.

These training sessions will continue each Thursday at 6pm in St Mary’s Secondary School Hall, all new players are welcome. Each player is requested to bring €2 each week for the rent of the school hall.
