Lorrha GAA News for 6 February

Dinner Dance: The club hosted a very successful Dinner Dance in the Co. Arms Hotel Birr on Saturday night last. 230 people attended a very enjoyable evening where the U16’s, Senior hurlers and Junior camogie team all received their winners medals for 2009. Thanks to William Harding for having the function room superbly decorated and to Stage Crew for providing the music.

Hogan Cup: Lorrha will take on Borris-Ileigh in Moatfield in the first round of the Hogan Cup on 6-7 March. The winners will travel to take on either Roscrea or Nenagh Éire Óg in the semi-final the following weekend.

U21 Football: Lorrha will travel to Newport in the first round of the U21 ‘A’ Football Championship on either 13 or 20 February. Lorrha will then host Nenagh Éire Óg before taking on Borris-Ileigh in the final group game. All U21 players must have their membership paid up in the next two weeks.

Membership: Membership is now available and the rates are unchanged for 2010. €40 – Adult Players; €20 – Non Playing Adults; €15 – Minor/College Students and Juveniles (with match ticket entry); €10 – Juveniles (without match ticket entry). All membership is payable to club registrar Tadhg Nevin. New GAA rules mean the closing date for membership is 31 March 2010. A reminder that only fully paid-up members can enter the draw for Tipperary tickets later in the summer.

Indoor Hurling: Big numbers have turned out for indoor training since its resumption and training for Under 8’s continues in Lorrha Hall on Friday night at 7pm sharp.

Gaeltacht Scholarships 2010: Coiste Chontae Thiobraid Árann are offering a limited number of Gaeltacht Scholarships to 2nd level students in the county. Closing date for applications is Friday February 12th. Students who have already booked a place in a Gaeltacht College and the deposit paid cannot avail of this scheme. These scholarships are only available in two colleges as follows:
1. Coláiste Aodain, Co. Na Gaillimhe (cost to student after scholarship – €450)
2. Coláiste Na Mumhan, Beal Athan Ghaorthaidh, Co. Chorcai (Cost to student after scholarship – €350).
Contact club secretary Kevin Hough (086-0515324) for an application form and return to An Runaí, Coiste Chontae Thiobraid Árann, Lar Na Páirce, Durlas Éile Co. Tiobraid Árann before Friday, February 12th. Please ensure the form is signed by Club Secretary and North Board Secretary as both units will be contributing towards the cost, if the scholarship is granted.
Between Febraury 18th and 26th, suitable candidates will be called for interview and all applicants will receive a response by March 1st.

Hurling Coaching Seminar: This Saturday February 6th there will be a Hurling Coaching Seminar at The Dome, Thurles. The guest speaker will be Cian O’Neill, coach to the Tipperary Senior Hurlers. Cost of course is €50 and you can book your place by contacting the Tipp GAA office on 0504-22702.

Helmets: Since the 1st January 2010, players at all grades are required to wear helmets in both training and matches. This compulsory change to the rules affects players at every grade and players are asked to ensure they have the correct helmets to meet new requirements. The GAA Injury Scheme will only provide cover in respect of hurling claims provided the injured claimant is wearing a Helmet which conforms to the NSAI Standard IS:355. ie Mycro, Marc or Azzurri. Cooper Helmets do not conform to this standard.

Lotto: The numbers drawn last week were: 7 – 10 – 11 – 22. No Winner.

All lotto draws take place in the GAA Clubhouse on Monday night @ 10pm. The draw takes place at 10pm and all are welcome to attend. Thank you for your continued support.

Old Time Dancing: Old Time Dancing continues on Friday night to the music of Frank Nelson. Dancing 9.30pm to 12.30am.

Sympathy: Lorrha GAA Club would like to sympathise with the McKeogh family, Ballina on the death of James McKeogh who died tragically over the weekend. May he rest in peace.
