Glounthaune AFC V Crosshaven 11/03/18

Crosshaven AFC travelled to Glounthaune AFC yesterday and it was another memorable performance from the Under 9 Galacticos. Now and then a fixture comes along when the boys learn more from losses and draws and this was one of them. The very essence of what it means to play for Crosshaven AFC was etched across their faces once again. They dug deep to come away with three draws and one win and gave 100%.

Team 1

Hughie, Will, Danial, Sam, Pete, Jimmy and Theo.

Game 1

The lads won the first game won 4 nil with the midfield dynamos Jimmy bagging 4 goals between them. Hughie kept a clean sheet and once again Daniel , Will and Sam (in what was his best game so far) protecting the goal ferociously. From now on this backline will be known as Maldini, Costacurta and Barresi. With Theo’s burning pace up front not one of the Glounthaune players could catch him once again, as we said last week if you do you get to make a wish. Well done young Theo.

Game 2

In the second game the lads drew 2-2 conceding a last-minute goal. Pete went in goal for the first half and made the best double save ever seen at this level earning applause from roughly 1500 supporters on the side-line. They had gone 1 down and it wasn’t looking good for the away team. Then in a blink of the eye Jimmy skinned them on the wing and put in ball with loads of zip which Will took brilliantly. Pete then managed to squeeze the lads in front with another very well taken goal. However a last second equaliser earned Glounthaune AFC a deserved draw.

Team 2

Dainéal, Chris, Fionán, Diarmuid, Fionn, Oscar, Fergus, Rian.

Game 1

The first game was tough with both sides giving it leather and ended in a fair 2-2 draw, which both sides were annoyed about. And there we were thinking that the game should be all about having fun, not so with these lads. All the boys played very well in what were trying conditions and were asking to go home after the match they were so exhausted. Both sides didn’t give an inch. Dainéal showed once again why the club should make a fortune off his multimillion Euro transfer to Juventus to replace Buffon at the end of the season.

Game 2

When the boys heard that that Team 1 had beaten this Glounthaune team 4-0 earlier they thought they had the game in the bag before KO even started. However Glounthaune showed what they were made of, going into half time with a well-deserved 3-1 lead. Shell shocked, and asking the usual “Can I play midfield? Can I player striker” the boys were told that if it they conceded early in the second half they would lose. The formation was changed and amid some colourful language and wild chants they went back out determined. Turning a 3-1 deficit into 3-3, Crosshaven then went ahead 4-3, only for Glounthaune to peg it back to 4-4 with a few minutes to go. Digging very deep and looking into their souls the lads stood up and after some great Total Football play between Chris, Fionán, Diarmuid, Fionn, Fergus and Rian they laid it up for Oscar to send a thunderbolt into the back of the net to make it 5-4, prompting delirious celebrations. Eat your heart out Carlos Alberto’s goal in the 1970 World Cup Final, this was better. It was all over or was it? Deep deep deep into injury time and with the last play of the game Glounthaune scored a heart-breaking equalizer with the last kick of the match. 5-5. Cries of “Poxy!”, and “What are they doing celebrating a draw!” ensued from the boys.

All in all, another great day out and huge thanks to Glounthaune AFC for hosting us. Both sets of parents left happy but how they were going to get the mud off the car seats again.
