Edenderry……0-04
Tullamore……0-11

Last Saturday, Edenderry’s minor footballers travelled to Walsh Island to take on Tullamore in the 2008 Offaly minor football final. After a tight first half, Tullamore pulled away in the second half to win on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-04.

Before the game started, there was a minutes silence for the late Patsy Bryan, which was well observed by both sides. With the first attack of the game Philip Farrell went on a great run through the heart of the Tullamore defence, before he was fouled. Ciaran Hurley then stepped up, and sent the resulting free between the uprights. Mark Young soon double Edenderry’s advantage when he sent a great shot over the bar. Tullamore soon settled, and scored two quick points to level the game. Derek Kelly then put The Reds back in front by a point, when he converted a free kick. Tullamore then levelled the scores with a good point, before Ciaran Cummins came to his side’s rescue with a great double save at the expense of a 45 metre free. Before the break Tullamore stepped up a gear, and hit three unanswered points to go in at halftime in front.
Halftime, Edenderry 0-03 Tullamore 0-06.
At the break Orrin Farrell was introduced in place of the injured David Hanlon in the full forward line. The first score of the second half went to Tullamore, when they sent over a great point from near the sideline. Disaster then struck, as the unlucky Orrin Farrell took a knock and was forced to leave the action after being only on the field a matter of minutes. Daniel Ryan then went into the full forward line in Orrin’s place. Tullamore then scored another good point, before Stephen Guing sent over an excellent point for The Reds. Tullamore finished out the game strongly as they scored a further three points without reply from Edenderry.

Despite loosing this game, Edenderry had some very good performances from Ciaran Cummins, Conor O’Donoghue, Stephen Guing and man of the match Daniel Moloney. All the Edenderry players who featured in Walsh Island on Saturday can be very proud of their efforts, as they kept fighting to the very end. The club would like to thank the management of Niall O’Leary, Willie Kelly, Kevin Guing, David Farrell and Stuart Jackman, who kept the side going throughout a truly challenging year, and to get as far as they did is an amazing achievement with all that had gone on. With half of Saturday’s team made up of this year’s under 16 team, and another three players who will line out at minor again next year shows the great potential that this side has for the coming year.
