Minor team victorious over a strong Ballyhaunis side!

November 8, 2018

Our minor team were in action on Sunday last, at home to Ballyhaunis in the second round of the minor league. The Gael's started the livelier and seen themselves go 0-10 to 0-4 up on Ballyhaunis with scores coming from Gerry Canavan, Ryan O'Donnell, Francis Regan & John Gallagher, before the away side bagged 1-1 in the space of 5 minutes to narrow the gap. Gerry Canavan responded for The Gaels with a superb point from play. Before the half time whistle, Ballyhaunis managed to narrow the gap with 4 points from play to leave a half time scoreline of: Mayo Gaels 0-11 Ballyhaunis 1-8.

It was tit-for-tat throughout the second half, with each side trying to steal the lead. Ballyhaunis started the quickest with a point from play and Gerry Canavan responded with a point for The Gaels. Ballyhaunis edged out in front with 2 points from play, before the Gaels pulled out in front with a series of well taken scores. Gerry lead the pursuit with a free, followed by John Gallagher, a superb goal from Liam Rushe and another 2 points from play from Gerry and John. Ballyhaunis soon found range and added a further 1-2 to their tally. At this point the sides were level at 1-16 2-13 and we were down to the dying minutes. Gerry added a free for The Gaels to put them one up, which Ballyhaunis soon responded to. Again the sides were level. Two frees converted by Gerry in the last couple of minutes secured the 2 league points on offer for The Gaels, to leave a final scoreline on a sunny Sunday in Abbey Park: Mayo Gaels 1-19 Ballyhaunis 2-14.

Well done to both sides in what was a well contested battle. The minors are in action again this weekend in the third round of the minor league, away to Ballinrobe on Sunday March 29th at 12pm.
