The Barna Seniors suffered a most disappointing defeat in the first round of the County Championship in Pearse Stadium on Sunday. On the back of some great performances in the league, the team unfortunately took too long to get going and two goals for Moycullen in the first half was always going to be a lot to make up.
Barna did manage to get a goal back before the end of the first half but Moycullen continued to pop over some crucial points, leaving the halftime score at Moycullen 2-06 to Barna’s 1-02.
The half time break will have been a welcome cooling off period for the players who had to play in extremely hot conditions as Salthill enjoyed the hottest day of the year. The break did allow the Barna team the chance to regroup and set about making up the seven point deficit.
Barna’s second half performance was somewhat better but Moycullen to their credit were ready to maintain their lead. Barna did have a couple of goal opportunities, not sitters by any stretch of the imagination but opportunities that may have found their way into the goal on another day. In the end, the score finished up Moycullen 2-10, Barna 1-8 .
