On Bank Holiday Monday we had Bishopstown at home in the first round of the 2007 Senior Hurling League. This game was in doubt at the weekend with the city side not anxious to play. They had a lot of players absent due to injuries, exams and holidays. Eventually the game went ahead with Bishopstown fielding a junior team – just 2 of last years winning Premier Intermediate winning side lined out for them. The game was played in freezing cold with a good sleety shower for good measure. Playing with the aid of a cross-field breeze we started well. Two points from Jerome and one from Barry Johnson plus a goal from Alan O’Keeffe in the 18th minute saw us 1-3 to 0-1 ahead. Two more pointed frees from Jerome gave us a 1-5 to 0-1 lead. The second half started with our defence well on top soaking up a lot of ‘Town pressure. Further white flags from Jerome, Terry and Sean stretched our lead. A goal from Michael Collins put us 2-8 to 0-3 ahead. Bishopstown did get through for a goal but we finished strongly and four points from Sean (2) and Terry (2) gave us a 2-12 to 1-4 win. A good start but far, far tougher games to come in this competition.
