S.H.L Final

November 8, 2018

For the second year in a row our Senior Hurling team were pipped at the post in the County League Final at Pairc Uí Rinn. On bank holiday Monday night we lost to Blackrock by 0-21 to 3-11, a margin of one point, the same as in the 2005 final against Glen Rovers. We led the game for 58 minutes and when the Rockies took the lead we levelled again only to be defeated by a late, late pointed free. We had a blistering start in this game and led by nine points 2-5 to 0-2 after less than 10 minutes. We had the aid of the breeze in the first half but this wasn’t a major factor in our dominance early on. The middle ten minutes of the first half however saw Blackrock score five unanswered points. Three points from Barry Johnson, Terry Broderick and Sean Ryan still left us 2-8 to 0-9 ahead at the break. Unfortunately we finished the half with three wides in a row. The Rockies tore into the game from the restart and we were glad of the cushion that our early goals from Donal Ryan and Michael Collins gave us. With Adrian Coughlan unerring from frees our lead was down to a point 2-9 to 0-14 in the 11th minute. Barry Johnson then blasted a penalty to the net and we were up four points once again. Barry added another point and we had a nice five point lead. Blackrock never panicked and just kept hitting over the points – Coughlan scoring 15 in total, 12 from placed balls. With time running out we were clinging to a one point lead. Blackrock levelled and then Coughlan put an 80 yard free over the bar for the winner.
This was a devastating loss and it was clearly visible on our players’ faces at the final whistle. Our first ever title at Senior Level was within our grasp but we didn’t get our hands on the Denis Conroy Cup. It was a great game and our lads can be proud of the hurling they produced but Blackrock won the title.

We have just 3 weeks from next Saturday night to prepare for the Senior Hurling Championship first round tie against St Finbarrs. This game is fixed for Pairc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday May 5th with Ballinhassig v Glen Rovers as the curtain raiser. Thanks to all our supporters who travelled in such numbers to Pairc Uí Rinn on Monday evening. It was great so see support not alone from the parish but all over North East Cork. Indeed we have great support but then a great hurling team like ours deserves such support.

Abernethy Cup
We are to play Erins Own in the semi final of this competition but it is unlikely now to be played before the S.H.C. game against St Finbarrs.
Our Senior Hurling Team is sponsored The Rathcormac Inn.
