Dowling Cup: Sarsfields 1-13 Moorefield 2-9

 By Tony Ryan

In an exciting and competitive Dowling Cup Round 2 clash in Sarsfields Park on Saturday afternoon last, Sarsfields edged out old rivals Moorefield by the slimmest of margins. It was a as good a game of football that one is likely to see at this early stage of the season or indeed at any time of the season. Such was the pace of the game that it more akin to championship football than a pre league tournament. The fast relentless pace of the game never let up throughout and the small attendance was treated to many passages of excellent, free flowing, attacking football between two fiercely committed teams

Moorefield showing no hangover from their County B final defeat to Sarsfields last Autumn signalled their intent from the start and led 0-3 to no score after 7 minutes.  Two points from Sarsfields sharpshooter Ray Cahill helped the home side to settle. The decisive score of the half came on 25 minutes when Darryl Edmonds was on hand to shoot to the net from close range, to stretch Moorefield’s 1-6 to 0-3 after a good Moorfield move that originated at midfield where the Moorfield pairing of Eamon Callaghan and Dara Dunne had a slight edge over their Sarsfields counterparts. A Keith Hedderman free from 40 metres reduced the deficit to 5 points for Sarsfields as the break approached but there no further scoring with Moorefield going in at the break with a 1-6 to 0-4 lead.

Immediately after the resumption Moorefield corner forward Ciaran Corrigan pointed to increase their lead to six but two minutes later Keith Hedderman with another long-range effort cancelled out Corrigan’s strike. From the kickout Ray Cahill caught the ball on the ’40 and drove through the heart of the Moorefield defence and as he was about to be tackled he off loaded the ball to the inrushing David Whorrisky who finished to the net to leave just two between the sides 1-7 to 1-5. Sarsfields then followed up with a point apiece from Ray Cahill and the industrious Bobby Houghton  to gain parity. Then an excellent point from the right wing by half back Fergal Doyle midway through the half put Sarsfields into the lead for the first time. Having scored 1-4 without reply in under ten minutes it appeared as if the game was swinging inexorably in Sarsfields favour as Moorefield wilted. However Moorefield rallied with a point a minute later from substitute Gareth Duffy. Ray Cahill responded to a put Sarsfields back in front but a goal by the impressive Dara Dunne with ten minutes remaining gave Moorefield a 2-8 to 1-9 lead once again. Sarsfields however finished strongly scoring three points without reply; a point from midfielder Niall Murphy sandwiched between two more fine frees from Keith Hedderman to guarantee Sarsfields a semi final spot.

Ladies Minor A Football Final Sarsfields 3-16 Celbridge 2-7

By Dema Houlihan

Despite the score line this was a closely fought game, Celbridge playing in their first A final acquitted themselves well but it was the more experienced Sarsfields who won the day. Celbridge started brightly with a burst through the middle from Orla  Gowran which was stopped by Oonagh Confrey whose clearance found Pamela Martin who was fouled. Roisin Byrne opened the scoring with the resulting free. Two minutes later as Sarsfields were running at Celbridge they drew another free which Clare Fox added their second point. Celbridge began to settle and it was Orla Gowran and Leah Earley who combined to put a ball into the danger area where Chanice Corcoran’s quick thinking boxed the ball to the net. The same player then made an excellent run and finished with a point to put the blues ahead by two after 10 minutes. Sarsfields were in no humour to lie down and began to dominate around the middle with Sarah Sheridan and Pamela Martin pulling the strings. Sadbh McDonnell showed a clean pair of heels as she ran through the Celbridge defence to reduce the deficit to one. The sides were level a minute later with another Roisin Byrne point from a free. Celbridge came back again and a great save from Caoimhe McConnell was cleared quickly and found its way to full forward to Laura Houlihan who shot to the net, Laura quickly added a point to stretch the Newbridge girls lead. The Sash were on top now and were rewarded with another Sadbh McDonnell point and a free from Roisin Byrne. It was Celbridge ill discipline that saw them reduced to 14 when Aisling O’Halloran was yellow carded for a wild pull on the ball. Celbridge fought hard not to concede too many scores but two more Roisin Byrne frees left Sarsfields 1-9 to 1-1 up at the break.

The second half saw Sarsfields use their experience close out the game effectively and with three minutes gone in the second half Roisin Byrne put over her first point from play. Celbridge responded with a point of their own from an Orla Gowran free. Then possibly the move of the game saw Sarah Sheridan pick up a ball and a good pass to Pamela Martin who freed up Clare Fox to run and shoot low to the Celbridge net. Celbridge responded yet again with a point from play from Nicole McDonagh. Sarsfields confidence was growing and when Becky Houlihan got in behind the Celbridge defence she saw her shot for goal turned over the bar for a point by Shannon Gannon in the Celbridge goal. Sarsfields cemented their dominance with Roisin Byrne and Pamela Martin shooting points from play. Again Celbridge went down the field and were rewarded with another point from Chanice Corcoran. Play moved to the other end of the field as Sarsfields added three unanswered points from Laura Houlihan and two more from Roisin Byrne. As both teams made the changes it was Celbridge who reaped the rewards with the hard working Sarah McNiffe adding a point followed by another from Asling O’Halloran. Lisa Marie Gaynor then got in for a goal with five minutes remaining to reduce the deficit further. Sarsfields withstood the Celbridge attack and when the ball was worked up the field Sadbh McDonnell was fouled. Pamela Martin saw her free deceive the Celbridge keeper to drop under the bar to settle the Sarsfields worries. To their credit Celbridge never gave up and went looking for the next score and were rewarded with a point from Leah Earley from a free at the death.

Scorers:

Sarsfields: – Roisin Byrne 0-9 (5 Frees); Laura Houlihan 1-2; Pamela Martin 1-1 (1-0 Free); Clare Fox 1-1 (0-1 Free); Becky Houlihan 0-1; Sadbh McDonnell 0-2

Celbridge: – Chanice Corcoran 1-2; Lisa Marie Gaynor 1-0; Orla Gowan 0-1; Nicole McDonagh 0-1; Sarah McNiffe 0-1; Leah Earley 0-1(free)

Feile A Sarsfields 6- 4  Moorefield 1- 12,

By Steven Murphy

Well done to the Feile U14 A team with a well earned and deserved away win over Moorefield on Monday evening. This completed a great double over our neighbours in the Feile championship, with our 2nd team also winning convincingly on Sunday morning.

With qualification for the knockout phase at stake both teams put on a great battle for the sizeable crowd who braved the chilly Curragh elements. The star of the show had to be Sarsfields full forward, Peter Howard who scored a hat-trick of goals in both halves. Moorefield had no answer to this tower of a player who could have scored more on the night. The game was closely fought and The Moores tally was mainly due to well taken points from frees in either half. Sarsfields Goalkeeper Colm Galvin played exceptionally well, making some very crucial saves throughout the match preventing the Moorefield forwards from adding to their one and only goal.

Other notable performances came from Tadgh Mcquillan at full back, David Marnel at corner back, Half Backs Sean Browne and Eoin O’ Connor, Shea Ryan in midfield and Eoin Donnelly at wing half forward.

The boys play their last group match at home to Celbridge this Sunday morning at 10:30am and needs as much support to come out and cheer them on for another crucial game.

As it stands:

Group 1: Towers and Athy have played 2 and won 2 – so both teams have qualified. Top and 2nd to be clarified next W/E when they play each other.

Group 2: Clane have won 2, Maynooth & Laurences have won 1 game each. Clane should top group, and 2nd place will be decided between Laurences and Maynooth

Group 3: Sarsfields have won 2, Celbridge won 1, and still need to play Leixlip. Top and 2nd should be decided this coming Sunday with Sarsfields home to Celbridge.

In Feile D, we are only team in group 2 with 2 wins todate, with 2 matches to play.

Naas and Clane have 2 wins each in group 1, with 1 match left to play and will both qualify to knockout phase.

True Story

Room Service – Tenjewberrymuds

The following is a telephone exchange between a hotel guest and room-service at a hotel in Asia. It was recorded and published in the Far East Economic Review:

To get the full effect it should be read aloud. [You will understand what ‘tenjewberrymuds’ means by the end of the conversation.]

Room Service (RmSv):  Morrin. Roon sirbees.
Guest:  Sorry, I thought I dialled room-service.

RmSv:  Rye…Roon sirbees…morrin! Jewish to oddor sunteen?
Guest:  Uh..yes..I’d like some bacon and eggs.

RmSv:  Ow July den?

The Eternal Question – Why?

Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darken our skin?

Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavour, while dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons?

Why don’t we ever see this headline:
‘Psychic Wins Lottery’?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a ‘Broker’?

Why isn’t there mouse flavoured cat food?

Who tastes dog food when it has a ‘new & improved’ flavour?

Why didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Why do they call the airport ‘the terminal’ if flying is so safe?

 * If you take an Oriental person and spin him around several times, does he become disoriented?

* If people from Poland are called ‘Poles’, why aren’t people from Holland called ‘Holes?’

* Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack, anyway?

* If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?

English Words with Quirky Logic

There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger.

Have you noticed that there is neither apple nor pine in pineapple.

English muffins weren’t invented in England

French fries do not originate in France.

A guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And there are no hogs in Hogmanay.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham?

You cannot buy boots in Boots nor virgins in Virgin. You cannot buy threshers in Threshers and the Superdrug chain is a big disappointment.

Quicksand only works slowly

If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

A pregnant goldfish is called a twit.

2) Strange Words

There is no parlour in in parlous. (Parlous – dangerous, hazardous)

Sweetmeats are sweets while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

When you are incommunicado: you are without the means to communicate.

3) The Problem with Speaking English

Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Humour

Paddy and Mick were walking along a street in London .  Paddy looked in one of the shop windows and saw a sign that caught his eye.  The sign read, ‘Suits £5.00 each, Shirts £2.00 each, trousers £2.50 per pair’.

Paddy said to his pal, ‘Mick look at the prices!  We could buy a whole lot of dose and when we get back to Ireland we could make a fortune.  Now when we go in you stay quiet, okay?   Let me do all da talking ‘cause if they hear our accents, they might think we’re thicko’s from Ireland and try to screw us.  I’ll put on my best English accent.”

“Roight y’are Paddy, I’ll keep me mouth shut, so I will.  You do all da business” said Mick.

They go in and Paddy said in a posh voice, ‘Hello my good man.  I’ll take 50 suits at £5.00 each, 100 shirts at £2..00 each, and 50 pairs of trousers at £2.50 each.  I’ll back up my truck ready to load them on, OK?

The owner of the shop said quietly, ‘You’re from Ireland , aren’t you?’

‘Well yes,’ said a surprised Paddy. ‘What gave it away?’

The owner replied, ‘This is a dry-cleaners.’

Midnight Blues

A man is stopped by the police at midnight and asked where he’s going.

The policeman asks, ‘Really?

And who’s going to give a lecture at this time of night? ‘My wife’
