Sat 10 June: Sean O'Toole Memorial 7-a-side T'ment in Kiltegan

November 8, 2018

The Sean O'Toole Memorial 7-a-side Tournament in Kiltegan last Saturday was a great occasion and a fitting way to mark the 20th anniversary of Sean's untimely passing in 1997. Teams from Kiltegan, Ballymanus, Rathvilly, Donard and Stratford took part with Kiltegan defeating Stratford in the Final. The young Clonmore team played very well in their two group games and only lost by one point to Stratford who went all the way to the Final.

The Clonmore panel was John McGrath (Captain), Anthony Byrne, Andrew Byrne, Willie Byrne, Darren McGrath, Larry Doyle, Tom Pollard, Josh Bowes, Luke Mullen, Con Cashen and Paul Byrne (Player/ Manager). Well done to Sean's sons Barry and Ciaran, and Kiltegan GAA, for organising this event to raise funds to help a sick child receive treatment in America. It was a huge success and a fine example of how communities pull together in support of a worthy cause.

Clonmore GFC was delighted to accept an invitation to participate in the Sean O'Toole Memorial 7-a-side Tournament in Kiltegan on Saturday next, 10 June, to mark the 20th anniversary of Sean's untimely passing and to raise funds for "Alex's Adventure", a charity set up to help a sick child from the locality receive treatment in America. Teams from Kiltegan, Ballymanus, Rathvilly, Donard/The Glen and Stratford/Grangecon are also taking part.

Sean O'Toole was from Penny Hill, Hacketstown, and had a distinguished playing career before becoming Chairman of Clonmore GFC from 1977 to 82. As team manager and a supreme motivator, he guided the club to the Intermediate Championship in 1980 and Div 2 titles in 1978 and 1981. Having moved to live in Kiltegan, he managed his adopted club to win two historic Wicklow Senior Championships – football in 1986 and hurling in 1987. He went on to serve as Chairman of Kiltegan from 1986 to 93 and 1996. A larger than life character who was extremely popular throughout the area, Sean was taken from us far too early when he died suddenly on 7 June 1997 at the age of just 47.

Well done to Sean's sons Barry and Ciaran for organising this charity event which is a fine example of how communities pull together when they need to and all support would be appreciated.
