Seniors off the Mark with Home Win

November 7, 2018

In any league teams will target picking up points from their home matches and following last week’s disappointing away defeat a home win was a very high priority.
Both sides started slowly shooting a brace of wides apiece before a Richie Stevenson free opened the account for the Highmoss. The visitors responded taking advantage of the breeze with a nicely taken point from distance. Michael Stevenson added a point, but despite having a decent share of possession Sarsfields failed to add to their tally. Sarsfields then gifted the Camlough men a goal through a combination of too much and poor quality passing out of defence. To be honest, the spectators could see this coming as the Highmoss defence had got away with a few poor passes earlier in the game. Credit though to the Shanes man who gave Darran no chance with the shot.
The goal however sparked a bit of life into the Highmoss. Richie Stevenson hit over a good point, thanks to a great delivery from Paul McGaughey. Paul McGeown was unlucky to see an effort just tail wide again after collecting a pass from Paul McGaughey. Playing the better football Sarsfields pushed forward and a great pass from Paul McGaughey set up Paul McGeown who unselfishly picked out Michael Stevenson who crashed the ball to the visitor’s net. Michael Stevenson quickly added a point and Shanes took advantage of a bad pass to hit their first score in almost fifteen minutes. Richie Stevenson closed out the half with a point, again after a great ball in from Paul McGaughey and final pass from Paul McGeown. Richie’s chance might well have been Sarsfields second goal but it rose sharply over the bar to see the Highmoss lead by three.
Sarsfields had the better start to the second half and quickly extended their leave with points from Michael Stevenson and Paul McGaughey. Paul’s point was nothing more than he deserved and it was a good score from distance after collecting a pass from Eamon McGeown. A minor glitch you might say let the visitors in for a point and this had come after Michael Stevenson had missed a close in free. Richie also missed a close in shot and there was no doubt that the four point lead did not reflect the home performance. However the defence was giving the visitors no space and points from Michael and Ritchie Stevenson extended the Highmoss lead to six points. This might have been greater but a shot from Michael Stevenson low and hard through the visitor’s defence was cleared off the line by a defender. Fair play though to Shane O’Neills who fought back hitting three points without reply to bring them within three points. The visitors pushed forward and although they had the ball in the Sarsfields net, the referee had blown for a foul, well before the shot was taken.
Again it was Paul McGaughey who stepped up with an injury time insurance point to put the result beyond doubt much to the relief of the home support. A deserved win, but improvement still required.
