SFL Div 2 Final: Clonmore 2-8 St Andrews 1-11 (Draw)

November 8, 2018

The Clonmore Intermediate team put on a great performance in the League Final on Sunday evening and but for some missed opportunities and a couple of harsh refereeing decisions at the end would have won the first Div 2 title for the club since 1998.

After going behind by 1-3 to 0-1 early on, the lads played some lovely football to deservedly lead by 2-3 to 1-4 at half time, the goals coming from Con Murphy and Niall Humphries. St Andrews got on top for a while at the start of the second half and kicked four unanswered points to go 1-9 to 2-4 ahead on 45 mins. Then it was Clonmore’s turn to kick some great points from Owen Coleman, Niall Humphries, Enda McGrath, David Mulvany and Gavin Byrne to put us two points ahead on 55 mins – 2-8 to 1-9 – and looking in control. But a couple of chances to extend the lead went astray and Clonmore paid the price as the Referee penalised Clonmore players for overcarrying on two occasions when they were clearly being fouled. Unfortunately, on each occasion, St Andrews took advantage to score points. Full marks to the players for a great hearted display and it puts them in good spirits for the first round of the Intermediate Championship against Palatine next weekend.

A special word of thanks must go to the Clonmore supporters who turned out in their droves to cheer on the team and gave the players great encouragment. The club is very grateful for your loyal support and hopefully the lads can finish the job in the replay (no date fixed yet).
