A chairde,
We hope you are all enjoying the weather and GAA action over the weekend.
A special congratulations to Laura Kelly and Emma Madden who helped Galway U16 Ladies to a comfortable win over Donegal to book a place in the All Ireland Final. Venue and Date TBC. Well done girls!!
Well done to Cathal Sweeney, Aidan Hallaron and Eoghan Tinney who all played a part in the Galway minors’ victory over Mayo last week, sealing a place in this year’s Connacht Final. A special mentiom for Cathal who gave a man of the match display including scoring 3 points from play from the wing back position. The lads will play their final group game vs Leitrim this weekend with the final scheduled for the following weekend.
Best of luck to Donal O Shea and the Galway Minor Hurling team who are in action over the weekend!!
New Officers 2019
We have had a few enquiries about taking over as officers (chairperson, secretary, treasurer) next year and a lot of the same questions have come up so we said we'd do a little frequently asked questions section in this week's newsletter that might answer some people's queries:
Do I need to have been on the Executive Committee before to become an Officer?
No is the simple answer to this. None of the current officers were on the committee prior to their nominations.
Will I have to attend lots of county board meetings?
No again. The club has very dedicated and hard working delegates who attend and liaise with the county board and bring the information back to the club. Nor are the offciers required to attend meetings of individual sections unless of course they want to or have been requested to.
How many Executive Meetings are there each Year?
There are around 10 meetings each year, usually taking around 2 hours. They are held once a month, including a short 1 hour meeting before the AGM and a break for July and usually either August or December. Officers would meet for an hour seperately once a fortnight usually at the begining and end of year only.
What is the role of the chairperson?
The role of the chairperson is to be the figure head of the club, chair the executive meetings and to oversee that the club is running well and in line with GAA guidlines. To be more specific, the chair's main job is to try to ensure all the the roles on the Executive are filled and the work asigned to those people is clear to them and is being done. The chairperson needs to liaise very closely with the treasurer and the secretary to ensure he/she is up to date on the finances and correspondences of the club. And above all the chairperson should set out the vision of the club, identify what is operating well and ensure it continues, and identify what areas need to be addressed and act on them. In a club as big as ours, ensuring everyone is on the same page and singing from the same hymn sheet is key so good communication skills are a must for this role.
What is the role of the secretary?
The main roles of the secretary are: Organise, allocate and set out pitch times for training and matches. Liaise with secretaries from other clubs and the county boards. Liaise with the secretaries from the individual sections and the club delegates. Be responsible for and keep track of all correspondences going in and out of the club. And to organise Executive meetings and the Club's AGM.
What is the role of the treasurer?
The role of the treasurer is to oversee the finances of the club, income and expediture. In the past two years the club's treasurer Noel Schofield and assistant, Barry Kelly have made huge improvements to the acccounting and book-keeping systems in the club and it is now extremely organised and above all much easier to follow and pass on. Payments are made in conjunction with the club's chairperson.
Do I need to have accounting skills to be a treasurer?
Accounting skills certainly help, but like the secretary the most important thing is to be organised and to stay on top of things. Noel has indicated that he will not seek re-nomination next year but he is happy to assist whoever comes in to see that there is a smooth transition and that the good pratices continue.
How will I be able to learn all I need to know?
The GAA provides training for all club officers and more importantly, the current club offciers will help out in the background to ensure no one is left in the dark.
Do you get lots of abuse and constant phone calls?
In any role of authority and influence you are open to criticism and judgement but I can honestly say 95% of the feedback I have had has been overwhelming positive. My assumption taking on this role 2 and a half years ago is that it would be a thankless task but I have been pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed at the level of apprecaition and gratitude from club members who can see that you are working hard and that our intentions are always for the betterment of the club. 99% of the people you meet and deal with are reasonable and working hard to do the best for the club and it is hugely enjoyable and rewarding to work with people in this capacity.
But there is a reality that we are not infalibile, we make mistakes like everybody. There are unreasonable people in all walks of life and people out there who love to cause a stir so sometimes you do need to detach yourself, admit a mistake or have a brass neck. There is the very occasional situatiuon of entitlement where an individual feels they deserve to be treated differently because of how long they have been involved, what they have achieved or how much they have given and this can lead to difficulties. Although not always easy, we have always stuck to the same policy that every member should be treated the same. In our humble opinion there is no place for entitlement in volunteerism.
As regards phone calls, we did receieve a lot at the start. But we have since put good structures in place to reduce the need for people to ring us. Bar the secretary who must liaise with managers, there are no longer a great number of reasosns for members to call the treasurer or the chairperson. Each section has its own director, secretary, delegate and treasurer to look after their own affairs. Someone is dealing with the Prairie, with the Árus, with the grounds etc. etc. so we certainly have improved on that front.
We hope this is of some help to people in deciding whether or not they'd like to serve as an officer in the coming years and hopefully our new chairperson, secretary and treasurer for 2019 on will have read this and are getting excited about getting involved.
Regards,
Diarmaid

Senior:
Hard luck to the senior footballers who were beaten by St. James in the John Dunne Cup on Saturday. The lads were hugely depleted with many players away last week.
Junior:
Hard luck to the Junior Footballers who missed out on a league final place after an agonising one point loss to Fr. Griffins Éire Óg on Friday. The lads were victim to some extremely cynical fouling in the last 10 mins with players taken down while through on goal. However it’s been a fairly successful league campaign all in all with 6 games, 4 wins, 2 one point defeats and over 40 players used. Next up is championship in August.
Minor:
The minor footballers are building up towards championship in August. They played out a highly competitive challenge vs Clane of County Kildare on Saturday afternoon in the Prairie.
