SKGAA Newsletter 13/9/17

November 8, 2018

A chairde,
There were great wins for our U16 camogie and football teams in the knockout stages of the championship this week as well as our U11 camgie and U12 ladies football teams. The U13 footballers also had a fantastic tournament down in Austin Stacks, Tralee, only to be beaten in the final by Naas. Congrats to the 6 lads on the Galway City West Ted Webb team who claimed the Connacht title on Friday evening with a very late show against Roscommon. Goals from SKGAA's Eoghan Tinney and captain Cathal Sweeney helped Galway to a one point win in Ballyhaunis.

The u13 squad travelled to the Austin Stacks tournament on 9th/10th Sept in Tralee. They were in a strong group and despite starting slow in the first two matches eventually came out with a tight win over Ballyboden St. Endas and a hard fought draw with NaGaeil of Tralee. That set us up with a table topping match v Legion of Killarney, which we ended up winning by 5 points thanks to some heroic tackling and blocks in the last 5 mins. Every player in the squad featured in those first 3 matches and played an important part. At one point it looked like a shoot out would be required to decide who went through to the Cup semi-final but Ballyboden beat NaGaeil in the final match to ensure we topped the table. A sign of the competition in our group was that the 3 qualifying teams from our group made it to their respective finals. In the semi-final we played NaPiarsaigh of Cork and came out on top at the end of a passion filled match (on and off the pitch) by 1 point. That set us up for a Cup final with Naas on Sun. Our lads fought bravely but on the day couldn't quite match the Kildare lads. All in all a hugely positive weekend with fabulous teamwork, fun and great football. Special thanks to all the parents and family members who made the trip to Tralee – they were the "extra man" we needed at times during the tournament.

We'll done to U16s lads involved in Ted Webb great to see Cathal lift the cup and 6 sk lads involved brill achievement well done to all coaches they had over years

Ladies Football

Junior – The Juniors continue training for the All Ireland Dublin 7s which will take place on the weekend of the 23rd. The ladies will face Kilkerrin/Clonberne in Championship Shield Final at the end of this month.

u14 – SK U14s resumed light fun training Sat 9th in McGraths. 14 girls attended. Did some light ball work and some alternatives for Fun game. Next sessiin planned for Sat 23rd Sept. Best wishes to Mayo next Sunday. Bring Sam back West.

u12 – A+B championship semi-finals were scheduled for last weekend. A match vs Monivea last Friday evening was called off due to their objections about the goalmouths just before throw in. So home advantage is forfeited, the girls must travel out to Monivea this evening. Seems unfair…
B team travelled to Carraroe on Sunday for their own semi-final. The girls played their way into the match and battled through the wind+rain and everything else to win well in the end. Super team effort, we are all very proud of this very big, hugely committed bunch of players. They are just great.
