SKGAA Newsletter 19/09/2018

November 8, 2018

A chairde,

We hope you are keeping safe in the storm out there today. A slightly less hectic week just passed here in SKGAA but some big games to report on never the less. The senior footballers have a make or break game vs Tuam Stars this Sunday with an opportunity to qualify for the quarter finals up for grabs. Well done to the U16 Girls Football team who have qualified for the Shield Final in thier first year at Division 1. There was a big win for our U15 hurlers and a narrow loss for our Junior camogie team.

All this and much more below…………

New Officers

With just 2 months to go until our Annual AGM, we are still waiting for potential officers to come forward. The club chairperson, secretary, treasurer and PRO will all be standing down come the end of November and as stated before, the club will need new people to take on those roles. As eluded to here before, the club is in a very good place from an administative point of view, and has a good foundation for others to come in and improve and develop on existing systems and ideas. Again, we would urge anyone who might have an interest to get in contact with us so that we might give you more of an idea of what's involved and any help we can. The current officers have done a good stint over the past 3 years, but it's time now for fresh energy and enthusiasm. Ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can do for your club!

If not now, then when?

If not here, then where?

If not me, then who?

Tournament in Beann Eadair, Dublin.

We entered 2 teams in this tournament, which had 20 teams split into a 1st team competition and a 2nd team competition.

It was played above Howth village, with spectacular views of Ireland’s Eye and the Irish Sea.

Both the Skgaa U12 teams put in great performances.

Team 1 had very good battles winning 1 match and narrowly loosing 3 matches in a very closely fought contests.

Get well soon to Ben Wall Cooke who broke his nose during the Westport match, who were subsequently pipped at the post in the final.

Team 2 won 3 matches and lost 1 in their group. Some very exciting encounters, winning last group match by a point in the dying seconds – going through to the semi-final which they won comprehensively.

Unfortunately they lost out in the final to Dromintee St Patrick’s (their 1st team) from Armagh.

Ladies Football

Great week for this bunch of U16 Girls. For the first time in this team history, the Girls overcame and beat Annaghdown in the Div.1 County Shield Semi Final at the Prairie Pitch on Mon 17/09/18.. The Final scoreline of 4-13 to 0-9 was comprehensive and 20 Girls got to play in this fine victory. Next up is a Shield final in late October against Oranmore who beat Dunmore in the other Semi-final.

On a Greasy pitch the Girls took the game to Annaghdown from the throw in. Back were tight and tough and cut off alot of ball and got it sent up to the forwards. Our forwards really stepped up the pace and took many early scores. Half time score was 2-8 to 0-5. In the second half, the selectors tweaked the team somewhat and the girls again stepped up their performance. Many chances were created and some taken in that second half. Also, the substitutes were all given a run to get them ready for the speed of Championship. In this challenging half, the Girls scored 2-5 to Annaghadown's 0-4. Credit needs to be given to the defence who time and again stopped goals being conceded.

Well done to all Players, Selectors, First Aider Dave Biggins & Umpires Gerry Kelly and Donal Conlon. Thanks is also extended to Jersey Washer Attracta Kieran who took the Gear to have the set washed for the upcoming Shield Final. Of course, we thank the Many Parents who supported and the Club for access to the Prairie which was in great condition and encouraged Quality football.

That's all for this week. Watch this space in a few weeks time for an update on the Shield Final Preparations

The U14 Div 1 team overcame a strong Caltra outfit in the Prairie last Thursday. Our girls had to endure a really tough battle in what was a very exciting contest for the spectators. A determined 2nd half performance saw us eventually run out 4-11 to 2-8 winners. Next up is Claregalway in the semi-final. No easy matches ahead here!

U14 Div 5 team play Killererin next Sunday in the Prairie. Shield semi-final. Training for all continues Wednesdays + Saturdays in Enda's.

U6 and u8 training at mcgraths pitch wednesday evening at 6pm parents are welcome to help out thanks the coaches
