There are 2 Coaching Workshops this Saturday all members should be aware of and are invited to with top class coaches delivering the sessions. Thanks to our Coaching Officer Edel Murphy and her team: Cian Begley, Noel Tyrrell, Joe Maguire and Mike Tarpey for organising.  

Club coaching forum Saturday 24 March in two parts:

– Football -Football Workshop on Saturday in the Árus and Prairie from 12.30pm for all coaches and interested prospective coaches. Current Ballintubber Manager, former SK U21 Manager and Senior Coach and Galway and Connacht Coach Kevin Johnson and Current SKgaa Senior Coach and former Mayo star Maurice Sheridan will be giving the course. 

– Hurling/Camogie 2pm-3.30 – practice coaching session for hurling and camogie nursery coaches, delivered by Galway GAA Coach and Schools Co-ordinator Gerry Spelman. 

It was an extremely busy week. We had a great turn out at our St. Patricks Day Parade. Again a huge thank you to Pat Gavin for making the float and organasing the SKGAA group. Thanks to all the coaches and parents also for helping out. 

We also had our Juvenile Football Awards night on Monday evening with 6 teams getting medals. a huge thank you to Noel Tyrell, Norman Costello and all the other coaches for organsing, and to our guests of honour Finian Hanley, Sean Armstrong, Evan Wynnne, John Maher and Robert Finnerty for presenting the medals. A great night was had by all.

There were a lot of teams in action over the weekend. The U20's have qualified for the West Board Final after a great win over St. Michaels. There were wins also for the minor footballers, the junior a camogie team and a super win over Portumna for the U16 hurlers. All info below.

We are delighted to say that Cappagh will be open again from this weekend on and McGraths Field from next week some time. Thanks to our friends in the City Council for all their hard work and to all the coaches for all your patience. The Prairie is also open for competitive games and is in great nick but will need to be closed after the Easter Camps for a short period again to be sanded and fertilized.

Easter Camps

There are 4 camps members should be aware of over the Easter Holidays:

1. SKGAA Easter Hurling/Camogie Academy:

**Tues 3 Apr to Fri 6 Apr 2018**

10am to 2pm each day.

Not to be missed! Fun week, with top-class coaches, skill development and plenty of matches.

For club members: Boys and girls u9 to u14 (born 2004 to 2009)

Cost: €40 per child, €70 for family of 2, €20 euro for any additional child in family

Please register for your place on the Academy with your own hurling/camogie manager or by texting 087 2887442 (Edel Murphy) by Monday 26th March. Every player registered by Mon 26 March will receive a free Academy t-shirt at the end of the Academy.

2. The SKGAA Easter Football Camp will be taking place from Monday 26th to Friday 30th March.

VENUE: Arus Bóthar na Trá.

TIMES: 9:30am to 1:30pm.

AGES: 6 to 14 year old boys and girls (must be a member of a GAA club).

COST: €50 per child / €10 per day (€70 for 2 children from the same family).

Places limited, so book early to avoid disappointment.

4. Bricks For Kids Easter Camp

From 2pm – 5pm each day in the Árus over Easter. Contact James in the Office for more Information 091527333. 

New Zumba Term

For any Zumba enthusiasts, there is a new term of Zumba with Weights in the Long Room every Wednesday from 7-8pm begining tonight. Just say you heard about it on the Club's Newsletter and you will receieve a discount!!!

A reminder with most teams in competitive action at this stage, please ensure your membership has been renewed to ensure all players and coaches are covered by insurance when engaging in training or games.

On the Field

Adult Football

Well done to the U20 footballers who defeated St. Michaels in the U20 Championship in difficult conditions on Saturday in Westside. The team have now qualified for the West Board Final and will await the winners of Moycullen and Oughterard who play this weekend. It was great team performance with Evan Murphy and minors Robert Waltzer and John Quinn standing out for skgaa on the day. Final score was 3-13 to 1-05. 

Well done to Sean Armstrong and Evan Wynne who were involved with the Galway team in their feisty draw with Dublin in the Stadium last Sunday. Next up is Kildare this weekend with the league final on Easter Sunday vs Dublin in Croke Park.

The seniors will step up their preparation for the coming season with a challenge vs Caherlistrane this weekend. 

The minor footballers had a good win over Oughterard in the Prairie on Monday. Despite missing 17 players the team delivered an impressive performance winning 3-10 to 0-11. Next up in the league  is Leitir Mór in the Prairie on Sunday morning at 11.30am and then they are out on Wednesday again away to Barna at 6.45pm. 

Adult Hurling

SK Junior Hurlers were narrowly defeated in their first outing of the Junior 1 Championship  away to Bearna/Furbo on Bank Holiday Monday. The Final Score was 0-12 to 0-11. SK led 10 points to 6 at h/t having had a strong wind on their backs but a last gasp point from Bearna gave them the win. Disappointing in the end but all battled well throughout against a strong side in tough conditions. 

The Junior's 2nd outing in this competition takes place in the Prairie this Sunday vs Menlo Emmets. Throw in 4.30pm. Please Support! 

Training for Minors Under 21s and Junior's changed to Thursday this week. Wall Ball and Sand, 9pm. 

Game comfirmed for the Prairie on Sunday at 4.30.

Juvenile Hurling

U10 Hurling 

Training for under 10s as usual 7pm on Friday. Thanks to all the parents and kids that represented the club in the St Patrick's Day parade on Saturday.

U12s Hurling 

U12s training Friday evening 8-9pm at the Arus. Last Wallball session before going outdoors.

U14 Hurling 

Our U14s play Rahoon Newcastle this Saturday at 11am (tbc) in the Prairie. And on Monday we travel to Ballinderreen for a 6:45pm start. 

U16 Hurling 

Great start to the U16 Hurling Championship this morning in the Prairie.  Our team had a 4 point win against Portumna.  

SKGAA 3-13 to 3-09 Portumna.  Next up is is a trip across the city to play Liam Mellows, Thursday the 29th at 6:45pm .

Camogie

Don’t forget it’s not too late to register for camogie and hurling academy that will take place from Tuesday 3rd April to Friday 6th. Contact your group coach or Edel @ 087 2887442. Fun week with top class coaches, skill development and plenty of matches.

U10 training continues this Thursday at 6pm at Arus. There will then be a break for two weeks over Easter.

U12s play first match of 2018 , a challenge away to Clarinbridge Saturday at 11am. Training continues this Thursday at 5pm at wallball.

U14s start  county championship with an away match against Cappataggle this Saturday. First grass training in Cappagh this Thursday 6.20.

U16s train at wallball Thursdays 7.30 to 9.00.

Juniors had a good three point win in a challenge against Castlegar last Sunday evening in Prairie.

Juvenile Football

Easter Camp put in spiel about this Football camp 26th March – 30th March great value €50 for 5 days

U6-U9 all taking a break for Easter for 2 weeks – hope some of the kids will attend the Football camp in SKGAA

U10/u 11 will train 1st week of Easter and then take a break for 1 week

U12 continue training on Sundays in Marys break for 1 week for Easter

U13/14 continue to train ahead of Feile in mid April .

U14s played a challenge matches played at weekend where Balyboden St Endas took on our u14’s in St Marys on Sunday. Unlike the Senior game between Dublin and Galway this game was played in good spirits with good football with the Dublin lads greater strength in depth and numbers telling in the end. Plans are afoot for a rematch on Easter Sunday before the League final which would be great for SKGAA lads to go to Croke Park as well as play a top Dublin side.

 

U15/16 Training continues Tuesdays and Sundays u15 had recent challenge with Annaghdown where they won 1st League match will be in 16B competition in April with U15 league starting in May

Fixture book due out soon with u14 1st league game 27th March and u16 1ST League game Friday 30th March games to be confirmed

 

Juvenile Football Awards night took place on Monday 19th March in Galway Bay Hotel and saw a lot of victorious teams from 2017 collect their medals – well done to all coaches and players and their families on bringing great success to SKGAA and also huge thanks to Noel Tyrell and Norman Costello and the SKGAA Galway on a great night, also thanks to Mark Gibbs and ATAK sports for sponsorship on the night.

Ladies Football

SKGAA Ladies football are holding a table quiz in Sheridan's, on April 12th @ 8.30pm. Get the date out to everyone involved, parents etc. Spot prizes and sponsors welcome. All funds raised are for Ladies football.

Junior – Hard luck to the Juniors who lost out to Oranmore on Monday. Training resumes in Cappagh @10.30 on Saturday. 

u16 – No matches took place over Paddy's weekend. Six of the u16 Panel played with Adult Ladies on Monday 19th. Thanks Girls. Next up is refixed match versus Moycullen on Sun 25th March.

u14 – U14 Girls played their first league matches at the weekend. Div 4 team lost to a stronger St. Gabriel's team in the Prairie on a bitterly cold Sunday morning and the Div 1 team were beaten by an impressive Claregalway team away on Monday evening. But there were positives to take from both performances and we will improve as we get more pitch time and matches under our belt. Attitude of the girls as always was good.

u10 – U10 girls skipathan postponed this evening to wed 11th April to accommodate a schools 3rd class event. Any girls coming this evening to training, please bring card and money in envelope.

u6/u8 – Under 8s and u6s looking forward to getting back training on the 11th of April.

Easter Camp

Multi Activity GAA Junior Easter Camp for our younger members running from Tuesday 3 April to Friday 6 April. The camp is open to all National school children aged 5-8 years.

Running from 9.30am – 1.30pm in the Árus and cost for the week is €50. If you would like to reserve a place, please email your child’s name & age to campskgaa@gmail.com.

Children can expect a week of fun and games while improving their GAA skills.
