A chairde,
Lots and lots to report on again this week. The senior footballers are through to the quarter finals of the championship following a hard fought victory over Tuam Stars on Sunday. There was a great number of SKGAA fans at the game as well so míle buíochas to everyone who made the effort to go out and support the lads. We'll need even more support for the quater final vs Milltown, the weekend after next. Lots to look forward to this weekend including the girls footballers' U14 Division 1 semi final on Saturday and the second annual Jack Fitzpatrick Memorial tournament on Sunday.
All this and much more below…………
Best wishes to Sean Armstrong who has announced his retirement from intercounty football after 15 fantastic years, winning 6 Connacht titles at all levels,a memorable All Ireland U21 in 2005 and SKGAA’s only ever Railway Cup Medal. Senior
Well done to the senior footballers who secured a hard fought 1 point victory over Tuam Stars to ensure passage into the championship quarter finals on Sunday in Corofin. The lads got off to the worste possible start, finding themselves 1-1 down against the breeze in the opening minutes. Luckily SK did not panic and Barry Kelly began dominating midfield and the deficit was reduced. In fact SK went into the break a point up following 1-1 in quick succession from Gearoid Armstrong and perhaps should have been further ahead. SK raced into a 4 point lead following the break and looked to be heading comfortably heading into the quater finals but Tuam did not lie down. The final fifteen minutes were nailbiting stuff with Tuam fighting back and going level with just a few minutes left. But the SK GAA defense showed huge resolve to keep Tuam out with all 6 backs playing well and even managed to score the winning point. Next up is a rejuvinated Milltown in the quarter final which promises to be another huge challenge. The game is provisionallu fixed for the weekend after next.
Minor
The minors have qualified for the West Board Semi Final as group winners following their win over Moycullen last Wednesday in the Prairie. The lads played an incredible first half, scoring 4 goals and the all round play and work rate was fantastic. Moycullen got a goal back at the begining of the second half and pushed hard for the next 15 minutes to reel SK in but a strong finish to the game saw SK worthy winners. Up next is the WB semi vs Oranmore or Leitir Mór.
