SKGAA Newsletter 4/10/17

November 8, 2018

A chairde,

It was a wonderful weekend for the club with the Juior Camogie team claiming a first adult county title in a number of year overcoming Liam Mellows on Sunday evening by 10 points in Tonabrocky. Huge congrats to manager Willie Madden, his coaches, Richie Marnell, Fr. Terry O' Brien and Kevin Lynch and all the players on a hugely successful season. A special mention must go to Woman of the Match Vicky Flanagan who put in an imperious performance in goals saving 7 or 8 point blank one on ones to keep a clean sheet. It was one of the great SKGAA performances and will live long in the memory. Congrats also to the minor footballers who claimed the west Board Title on Saturday after victory over Barna. It means 4 West Boards in a row and 6 in 7 years for SKGAA but the lads aren't thinking about that. It's a rematch of last year's county final where a very strong Claregalway team will be looking for revenge. The game takes place on Sunday the 15th of October in Tuam Stadium at 2pm before the County Final. We will need a big SKGAA support to drive the lads on.

The excitement doesn't stop there. SKGAA will contest no less that 3 County Finals this weekend. The U14 and U16 footballers travel to Caherlistrane on Sunday for a double header. Noel Tyrell's U14s play Oranmore/Maree with throw in at 3pm and Norman Costello's U16s face Corofin at 4.45. The U16 camogie team under the stewardship of Cathal McGinley are fixed to play their county final this Saturday vs Killtullagh Killimordaly in Touloughmore at 3pm.

With 4 county finals coming up in the next 2 weeks, we would ask members to make a special effort to try to get to some of these games and cheer on the teams. I'm sure you were all aware of the hard work and dedication put in by the players and coaches but we can all do our bit by supporting the teams on the day. Reaching all three underage county A football finals is an incredible achievement for any club but lets give the players the support they deserve and need.

Our Junior team had  fantastic success on Sunday evening winning the Junior B Championship final against Liam Mellows by an impressive scoreline of 3-7 to 0-6. This was a fitting reward for this panel of 30 who have put in serious training effort all year and have seen their performances improve every game. This was a strong team performance on the day in windy conditions with scores from Aine Griffin (2-2), Aoibhe McGinley (1-0) and Sorcha Marnell (0-5) plus a big performance from Siobhan Divilly in midfield . The defensive performance was also strong, led by goalkeeper Vicky Flanagan who made several outstanding saves at critical times and Vicky was deservedly awarded Player of the Match for her heroics much to the delight of the large crowd in attendance.  There was huge cheers as captain Evie Hayes lifted the Raftery’s Rest Kilcolgan cup leading to long celebrations! Congratulations to the panel and everyone involved, especially the management team of Willie Madden, Richie Marnell, Kevin Lynch, Deirdre Kelly (Physio) and Fr. Terry O’Brien. The team now advance to the semi-finals of the Junior Connacht competition against Padraig Pearses of Roscommon on 14th October. Special thanks must go to our neighbouring club Rahoon-Newcastle who made their pitch available at short notice to allow the fixture be played and who showed great hospitality on the day.
