St. Patrick's ladies football update

November 7, 2018

On Sunday evening last may 20th our ladies junior football team played Killenaule in the Junior D league final. Having qualified for the final on Friday night by beating Clonmel og in the semi-final, it was a big ask to have to play the final 48 hours later. Too add to the St. Pat’s ladies woes they had to field without a number of their key players who were unable to play due to injuries or exam commitments.

Killenaule got off to flying start scoring a goal and a point before Una O Brien scored a well taken goal for St. Pat’s. Una added two more points for the St. Pat’s ladies but Killenaule had another goal and four points at the other end. Shelley O Dwyer completed the scoring for St. Pat’s in the first-half with a well taken point to leave the half-time score Killenaule 2-5 St.Patrick’s 1-3.

Killenaule took control of the game early in the second half with two goals and three points within a few minutes. Although St. Pat’s fought back with points from Deirdre O’Donovan and Siobhan Nash, it was Killenaule who finished the stronger and were well deserving winners on the night with a final score of Killenaule 6-11 to St. Patrick’s 1-8.

On the night Roisin Horan had a good performance for St. Pat’s in defence and was ably assisted by Jane Fitzgerald and Rebecca Hayden. Linda Nevin battled hard in the centre of the field while up front Una O’Brien was our main threat with a personnel tally of 1-4. Both Michelle Meagher and DeirdrenO’Donovan made a significant impact when introduced in the second half but it wasn’t enough to turn the game. We congratulate Killenaule on their victory as they are a young side competing for the first time at Junior level.

Our ladies will now focus on the championship and hopefully with the availability of a full squad of players they can still bring glory back to Drangan and Cloneen in 2012.

Team: Louise Gleeson, Aileen Sugrue, Roisin Horan, Jane Fitzgerald, Rebecca Hayden (capt.), Rachel McCormack, Maeve Brown, Linda Nevin, Una O‘Brien, Niamh Dunne, Siobhan Nash, Ann Sugrue, Aine O’Donovan, Shelly O‘Dwyer, Denise Noonan, Michelle Meagher, Niamh Morrissey and Deirdre O’Donovan.

Mentors: Michael Nash, Trishe Strappe, Pat Morrissey and Helen Hogan.
