DUBLIN 1-21 TIPPERARY 1-13
Dublin limped into the next round of the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers after accounting for the plucky challenge of Tipperary in Saturday’s round 2 qualifier at Croke Park on Saturday evening.
A crowd of only 22,107 were present as Dublin struggled to finish off the Premier County despite dominating the game in the early passages.
The Dubs led 0-6 to 0-1 inside the opening 11 minutes but it would have been a lot more but they failed to clinically put away opportunites or maximise possession and territory.
Kevin McManamon had a gilt-edged goal opportunity in the opening minute after Dublin carved open the Tipp defence but he sliced wide from close range and it really took the running and interplay of the likes of David Henry and Alan Brogan to get their side up and running.
Nineteen minutes into the first half Eoghan O’Gara powered in along the end line at the Davin Stand end before handpassing inside for Michael Darragh McAuley to fist the ball to the net which put the Dubs 1-6 to 0-3 in front.
However, only two minutes later Rory O’Carroll lost his footing when attacking a delivery presenting full-forward Barry Grogan with a goal chance which he took in impressive fashion.
The Munster men drew great belief from this score and the pace of Philip Austin continued to cause problems for the Dublin rearguard.
By the interval Dublin held a narrow two-point advantage, 1-9 to 1-7, after McManamon got the last point of the half when he fisted Henry’s shot dropping short over the crossbar.
Dublin had a few productive but short periods in the second half but they were sufficient to keep Tipp at arm’s length. Eamon Fennell pointed, showing good strength, in the 43rd minute and the next two scores went to Alan Brogan and Eoghan O’Gara. Then at the three-quarter mark Bernard Brogan, Conal Keaney (free), and Ross McConnell scored in quick succession to open up a six-point lead, 1-16 to 1-10, with the introduction of Bryan Cullen injecting more direction and purpose to the Dublin attack.
