U-15s win County League title. Mayo Gaels 3-6 Moy Davitts 1-6

A good start is half the battle and goals win games proved to be the case for our U-15s as they captured the County Division 2 League title with a 3-6 to 1-6 victory over Moy Davitts at a sunny Claremorris on Sunday afternoon.

The Gaels got off to a dream start and had their large support in fine voice with two goals in the opening few minutes. Two long balls into the Moy Davitts square caused havoc and were both finished to the net by the alert Shane Lyons after good work by Brian Flynn.  Moy Davitts found themselves 2-0 down but responded superbly over the next twenty minutes. They kicked 1-4 without reply from the Gaels to give them a one point lead, 2-0 to 1-4. The Gaels showed great character to the Moy Davitts surge in the final ten minutes of the half with points from the hardworking Kevin Lynch, an Adam Gallagher free and another Adam Gallager point from play. This gave the Gaels a two point half time lead 2-3 to 1-4.

They started the second half where they left off with another Adam Gallagher free to push their lead to three. But once more Moy Davitts hit back with two points from play to leave the minimum between the sides, 2-4 to 1-6. It’s a testament to the super performance of the entire defence during the second half that this was to be Moy Davitts last score of the game as they repelled the numerous attacks with a great display. The attack and in particular Adam Gallagher lead the Gaels home in the final ten minutes with a further 1-2 to see out the game. Adam Gallagher kicked a fine point from play and killed off the game with great run and finish for the decisive goal to leave the Gaels 3-5 to 1-6 ahead. Moy Davitts pushed forward in search of a goal but again the Gaels defence refused to be breached. Adam Gallager had the final say with another free to leave the final score 3-6 to 1-6.

Overall it was a great team display but special mention must go to Brian Heneghan, Padraig Prendergast, the outstanding Fintan Canavan, the tireless ball carrying of captain Kevin Lynch, Adam Gallagher, Alan Morris and Brian Flynn.

Captain Kevin Lynch received the shield afterwards to the delight of the large Gaels support. Well done to team mentors Derek Vahey, Brian Adams who were ably assisted by Jonathan Morrin and Danny Burke.
