Edenderry’s under 10 footballers kept up their fine form in the Community Games, when they followed up their Offaly final win against Rhode, with a great win against Moate in the first round of the Leinster Competition last Friday in Edenderry.
From the start Edenderry were the stronger side, and within seconds of the throw-in they nearly scored the opening goal, only for Moate’s goalkeeper to deny Ryan Glynn with a great save. Edenderry opened the scoring shortly after with a point from Cian Farrell after a good run from midfield. Ryan Glynn put his side two points in front with a good shot, after a pin-point pass from Cian Farrell. Ryan O’Neill then scored the third point, before Edenderry were dealt a setback when Moate levelled with a goal which was scored after a high ball dipped into the net. Edenderry then took over for the remainder of the half with Cian Farrell grabbing an impressive 1-03. He scored three points, two frees and one from play, before he got the score of the game when he sent the ball to the roof of the net after a great solo run. Moate pulled a point back before the break to reduce Edenderry’s lead to five points.

At the break Stephen Pender was introduced in the forwards for Bobby Reynolds. Cian Farrell opened the scoring in the second half with a good point from a free, before Jack Costello replaced the injured Ciaran Lawlor, with Jack going half-forward and Cathal Farrell going centre-back. Edenderry then scored two points from Cian Farrell and Ciaran Breen, before Moate scored an excellent point to leave seven points between the sides. Edenderry management then made a switch at full back, with the injured Adao Daffe making way for Seanie Coffey. Edenderry’s first substitute Stephen Pender then scored a point, when he won possession on the half-forward line, and then turned and kicked a great point. Conor Dempsey then replaced Ryan O’Neill at full-forward, before Moate sent over a great point. Cian Farrell was on the scoresheet again, when he converted two frees, with the second in particular being very impressive, as he sent over a brilliant point with the outside of his boot. Jack Staunton then replaced Ciaran Breen at corner forward, before Cathal Farrell scored an excellent point. Despite there being 10 points between the teams, Moate didn’t give up and they finished the game strongly as they scored three good point to leave seven points between the sides at the end.
This was an excellent display from all 20 Edenderry players, with the pick of those players being Adao Daffe, Gary Gorman, Ciaran Lawlor, Ryan Glynn and man-of-the-match Cian Farrell. Edenderry will play Emo in the next round of the competition. This will be a repeat fixture of last year’s competition, with Emo coming out on top on that occasion. At time of writing a date has not been fixed for this game.
