U16's bow out of Championship

November 8, 2018

Edenderry u16’s were knocked out of the championship on Monday evening after they suffered a four point loss to Shamrocks. Despite a very impressive first half display, the young reds failed to score in the second half and were duly punished by a strong Shamrocks side.

Edenderry started the better and with help from Jamie Dolan they raced into a two point lead, the scores coming from Mikie Clear and Alex Kenny. In the seventh minute Shamrocks responded with their first score of the game but Edenderry hit back immediately with points from Oran Lawton and Mikie Clear. Shamrocks were playing against a very strong breeze so they would have been expecting Edenderry to have more possession but in the eleventh minute they registered their second point of the game. Three minutes later Mikie Clear added his third of the game after some great play by Adam Mahon and Leslie Nolan. In the nineteenth minute Shamrocks got through for goal but Cain Brereton in goals pulled off a fantastic save and Shamrocks had to settle for a point.. Edenderry hit a great spell and over the next three minute they kicked three brilliant points, one from Mikie Clear, one from Aaron McDonnell and the score of the game which came from Alex Kenny.

However, Shamrocks hit back with two fourteen yard free’s and just on the stroke of half another fantastic save from Cain Brereton stopped a certain goal for the Mucklagh/Rahan parish side. They did register their sixth point however but Adam Mahon had the final say of the first half to leave three points between the sides.

Half time:
Edenderry 0-9
Shamrocks 0-6

The second half was always going to be a struggle given the high winds and weather conditions but unfortunately for the reds they just didn’t make use of the possession that they did have. Shamrocks scored a point after just two minutes and the circumstances surrounding it where to typify the remainder of the game. Edenderry had lost possession in the forwards when they failed to shoot for score. In the sixth minute another point for Shamrocks left one between the sides and spectators felt the next score would be crucial. It went the way of the Shamrocks men in the twelfth minute and they took the lead on the fifteenth minute after a successful ’45. Edenderry had a chance to level the game in the nineteenth minute but their free was kicked short and Shamrocks carried the ball down field and took a two point lead. Further points in the twenty third and twenty eight minute gave Shamrocks a cushion and they held out as the reds failed to record the scores they needed.

Full time:
Edenderry 0-9
Shamrocks 0-13

Edenderry will be bitterly disappointed with this loss as a place in the final was a realistic possibility. While they could not fault the effort, especially in the first half, failure to take the right options at times in the second half cost them dear.
