Under 14's Earn First Win

Last Monday evening, the Edenderry under 14 footballers gave a brilliant second performance to beat St Vincent’s at Kilclonfert on a scoreline of 4-07 to 0-06.

Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half, St Vincent’s opened the scoring with a great long range free. Edenderry then had a brief period of dominance when they scored a point from Alex Kenny after good work from Ross Mangan, while they could have two early goals, but Leslie Nolan and Ross Mangan had two narrow misses. Then St Vincent’s took over and dominated the remainder of the half. They scored two pointed frees, before Bobby Walsh replaced Stephen Connolly in the Edenderry full forward line. St Vincent’s then scored three more points, two from play and one from a free to go five in front. Just before halftime, Edenderry had their goalie Cain Brereton to thank as he made a brilliant save to deny a St Vincent’s goal.

After the break Edenderry came out a different team, and with their first attack of the second half Stephen Lennon scored a lovely point. Stephen was then involved in the next score as he kicked a great pass to Ciaran Farrell who sent the ball to the St Vincent’s net for a fine goal. Alex Kenny then scored two points, one from a free awarded for a foul on Bobby Walsh, and one from play after a great pass from Ross Mangan. Ross then added two point himself, the first with his right foot, and the second with his left foot after he played a one/two with Adam Mahon. Edenderry then grabbed their second goal, when Stephen Lennon was quickest to react to a rebound from a save by the St Vincent’s goalie, as he punched the ball to the net. That goal was quickly followed by another when centre-forward Adam Mahon sent a high ball into the St Vincent’s square and the goalie misjudged the flight of the ball, and it ended up in the back of the net. Craig Monaghan then added Edenderry’s fourth and final goal, when he fired an unstoppable shot past the St Vincent’s goalie. Stephen Lennon then scored the last point of the game for Edenderry, as his shot was tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper. Before the end of the game St Vincent’s piled on the pressure on the Edenderry, but some stout defending from Damien Sadowski, David Hughes and Mark Abbott, and another fine save from Cain Brereton, helped keep St Vincent’s at bay.

The second half performance from Edenderry can be one that the whole team can be very proud of. They really gave it their all as they defended very well, while they scored an impressive 4-06 without response. The team had some great performances in the second half from David Hughes, Mark Abbott, Ross Mangan, Craig Monaghan, Stephen Lennon and Ciaran Farrell, while Edenderry’s man-of-the-match was Damien Sadowski who gave a masterful display at full back for the entire hour.
