Football:

Men’s Senior Team: Cúchulainn senior team continue to improve week on week as we notched up our first win of the campaign at home in Mullaghbawn on Sunday evening. The local statisticians advised after the game that this was the first victory at home to Maghery in 4 previous outings. The home team which is currently badly hit by injuries managed to overcome a very stout performance by a Stefan Forker inspired Maghery outfit with strong performances by Gary Ferris, Karl Quinn and a man of the match performance by Gareth Smyth who had the unenviable task of putting the shackles on that Forker man.  Just like last week this match was nip and tuck the whole way until a resolute Mullaghbawn team showed their true resilience in the last 10 minutes coming from behind to win by 3 points on a score line of 1-10 to 10 points with Frank Daly and Eamon Quinn driving the team over the line in the final stages. The full team worked hard to deliver this victory none more so than Paul Kelly who ended the match with a broken nose – get well soon wishes to Paul. Training continues for the senior men on Tuesdays and Fridays.

U18 and U16 Team: Minor and juvenile training is as usual on Thursday evenings from 7pm to 8pm .

U14 Team: -14 An Mullach Ban v Crossmaglen

Our U-14 team went down to play Crossmaglen this week, we held our own for the first 10-15 minutes, reducing Crossmaglen to long range shots and pushing them well wide of the scoring area. Our brilliant defending was then breached with a goal and a couple of points. Things were not looking good for us at this stage, but with our never say die attitude, things started to improve, with a couple of points and a goal before half time. The second half was hard fought, with some brilliant moves up the field producing some spells of very good football throughout the game. Shane Murchan worked really hard around the midfield, helped out by his team mate Stephen Lavelle who was playing as a sweeper and managed to get a score after working really hard all day. Stephen McCoy and Niall Brady worked tirelessly in midfield and half forward and kept pushing forward at every opportunity. Seamus Strain knocked over two free kicks from about 25-30 yards out and never stopped all day. His brother Niall worked hard all evening up and down the line, never giving up. Patrick Tiernan, Eamon O Coyne, Ryan Crilly, Ryan McKinley and  Ciaran Walsh  also had good games in the defence, and David Hughes did really well starting off in the full forward line and ending up in the full back line towards the end of the game. Well done to all the subs who played, and apologies to those that didn’t get to play. The U14s train on Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30 and Thursday evenings from 7pm to 8pm .

U12 Team:  U-12 League An Mullach Ban v Shane O’Neills – The Cúchulainn U-12 team were short a number of players for the away game in Camlough on Saturday afternoon and that, combined with the superior height and physique of the home players meant that a negative result was the inevitable outcome. Shane O Neill’s took an early lead which they never relinquished, but the second half display by the Cúchulainn team was a credit to the club. Despite their physical disadvantage, they tackled and harassed like demons and would have scored much more without the intervention on several occasions of the crossbar and the uprights. Scores by Padhraig Mackin, Cailum McNulty, Niall Strain and a brilliant goal by Barry Quigley left a respectable look on the scoreboard. It is unfair to single out players on what was a team of fifteen fighters, but special mention must be made of Eamonn O Coinn, Niall Strain and Padhraig Mackin who showed skill and commitment way beyond their years. The lineout was: Raymond Murphy, Ferghal Mackin, Eamonn O Coinn, Patrick Murphy, James O Hanlon, Niall Donnelly, Shane Myles, Niall Strain, Cailum McNulty, Shay Loye, Lisa McCann, Niamh Donnelly, Barry Quigley, Padhraig Mackin and John Rafferty. – U12 training continues on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 on the training pitches.

U10 Team: The U10 Team got their first victory of the league campaign against a hard working Shane O’Neill’s team with a final score of 3-5 to 2-2 with Cailum McNulty scoring an impressive1-2 from the full back berth. The lads continue to improve and are starting to gel much better as team. The team worked particularly hard all over the pitch but a special mention goes to Sean Stephens and Gerard McCann who each got key scores in the game and Morgan McDonnell who pulled off a few fantastic saves at a crucial point in the game to keep the pressure off his team mates.  The team included Morgan McDonnell, Cormac Hughes, Cailum mCNulty, Brendan Court, Miceal Muckian, Eugene McKeever, Ruari McCann, Fearghal Mackin, Shay Loye, Gerard McCann, Eoghain McDonnell, Luke Owens, Oisin Garvey, John Rafferty, Sean Stephens, Michael McCreesh, Conor Grant, Bernard McGeeney, Michael McCann, Paul Myles, Tomas Muckian, Niall Owens, Declan Murphy, David McKinley, Cormac Smyth,   Training continues on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 on the training pitches with next weeks match again scheduled for the Sunday morning at 11:15. More details at training on Tuesday evening.

Club Lotto: Such has been the popularity of our online lotto that it was only a matter of time before we had our first online winner – in fact last week saw not one, but 2 online winners with both Moira Hughes and Fergal O’Brien both matching 3 numbers, with Moira only missing the jackpot by 1 number – had Moira chosen 23 instead of 24 she would have been £3400 richer! Let’s hope their luck continues next weekend as both are key members of our Ulster Championship winning Scor team who head for the All Ireland Finals this weekend. The Club lotto jackpot is now at £3450. For this week’s winners see the Cross Examiner Club Lotto page or simply log onto the club’s website at www.mullaghbawn.armagh.gaa.ie and view the winning numbers or click on the “Play Now” button on the home page to play your numbers on-line. Remember – you can buy a ticket and submit your numbers for the next 7 weeks and get the 8th week free! A big thanks to all those new players who have registered on line.

Scor: Saturday evening saw the return leg of the Tyrone and Ulster Champions – St Enda’s of Omagh visit to Armagh and Ulster Champions Mullaghbawn. The night opened with a rousing performance from the Mullaghbawn Senior traditional group accompanied by Michael Quinn. This was followed by tremendous performances in Ceili, set and solo dances from St Enda’s Omagh. We also had great dancing display from Anna and Ruari McCann fresh from their success in the All Ireland finals. Then courtesy of Patsy Doyle and Media Ireland we had a showing of the ‘Whats the Scor’ programme with St Mary’s Primary school. Next up was Micil Quinn who got the crowd roaring with a newly composed song in honour of the local traditional group. Other artists who featured on the night included Dearbhla Bennett accompanied by Padraig Carragher, David Cunningham, senior and junior traditional groups, and a wide variety of young singers. Another highlight of the night was local woman Blaithin Dornan, singing a number destined for the All Ireland Dramaíocht finals on Monday week in Mullingar. The club was filled to bursting point and there is no doubt that the Armagh / Tyrone friendly will continue into the wee small hours in Killarney next weekend. Thanks to the many people who contributed so generously to the raffle, the legions of sandwich makers and of course our regular musician Michael Quinn on sound. Finally there was much talk about the next big Scór night in the club scheduled for Sunday the 27th April (win, draw, or lose!!!)

And if that has whetted your appetite there are still a few limited tickets available for the trip to Killarney next weekend to witness both Mullaghbawn and also Omagh in the All Ireland Finals of the Scor – Larry Crilley is the contact for this event.

Bingo : Eyes down for the first House from 9pm in the Club on Wednesday evening as usual.
