Under 14s in Carlow Feile: Clonmore participated in the U14 Feile in Carlow’s Training Centre in Fenagh at the weekend. First up was against a strong Eire Og team who tested our defences to the limits and defeated us with a strong score. The Clonmore lads recovered and went on to beat Ml Davitts with a score of 2-4 to 1-4. The game started with Clonmore going a goal down shortly into play. Clonmore got into gear and with scores from Robert Bulmer (1-1) Billy Lawlor (0-1) Conor Mooney (1-0) Eoin Byrne and Rory Maguire (0-1) we soon found the lead, Ml Davitts hit back hard with 4 points near the end, but Clonmore held on for victory as the final whistle was blown.

Next up was against O’Hanrahans, who we overcame with a score line of 5-7 to 3-1. O’Hanrahans got a good start with a quick goal ten mins in. Clonmore fought back with scores from Dan Cashin (2-2), Jake Hickey (1-0) Eoin Byrne (1-3) Robert Bulmer (1-1) Rory Maguire (0-1). Other players on the day were Eoin Connolly, Sean Tompkins, Paul Lyons, Cormac Connolly Keith Bowes, Dylan Doyle, Rory McKiernan and Matt Cullen. Special mention to Sean and Oisin Mulvany, Sean Moran who had outstanding games.

Thanks to all who supported the team for the day and a special thanks to Niall Humphries for taking the team for training sessions. Training continues every Thursday for the team from 7-8pm.

19 March: Minor League: Clonmore 2-8 Slaney Rangers 2-8

The Minor team put on a determined display to earn a deserved draw against Slaney Rangers in Tullow on Wednesday evening and were unlucky not to win the game. Clonmore opening brightly and were 1-3 to 0-1 up after 17 minutes thanks to points from Darren Daly, Dale McNamara and Adam Byrne and a well taken goal by wing back Jason Byrne. Slaney came back to level but just before half-time, Josh Bowes and Francie Whelan, both just out of the u-14 team, scored a couple of excellent points to put us 1-5 to 1-3 ahead at the break.

In spite of playing against a strong wind in the second half the youthful Clonmore lads gave as good as they got and extended the lead to 2-7 to 1-5 with a tidy Francie Whelan goal on 48 minutes. The Clonmore backs were outstanding, blocking and tackling as if their lives depended on it and Michael Kealy made some great saves in goal. The scores were level at 2-7 apiece on 59 minutes when Adam Byrne scored what looked like the winner but in injury time Slaney scored the equaliser to make it a draw which was probably a fair result. For a team which included five 15 year olds, this was a remarkable performance against a team with the pick of Tullow and Grange and augurs well for the season ahead. Well done to players and mentors, Des Byrne and John Doyle.

Next game: Wednesday, 26 March, 7pm, home to Myshall.

Team: Michael Kealy, Joe Hickey, Tom Cashin, Larry Doyle, Josh Bowes (0-1), Sean Doyle, Jason Byrne (1-0), Andrew Byrne, Adam Byrne (0-2, 2f),  Darren Daly (0-1), Dale McNamara(0-2, 2f), Jonathon Byrne (0-1), Sean Foley, Adam Doyle, Daniel Quigley. Subs: Frank Whelan (1-1), Jordan Kane.

23 March: SFL Division 5: Clonmore 0-7 Fighting Cocks 1-10.

The Juniors played well but just came up short against a strong Fighting Cocks team in their first outing of the season at Woodside on Sunday. The Cocks led 0-6 to 0-2 at half-time, the Clonmore points coming from Gary Byrne and Clive Lambe. A highlight of the first half was a great double save by county U-21 goalkeeper, Paddy Byrne. The lads made a good start to the second half and narrowed the gap to 0-7 to 0-4 but a Cock’s goal on 40 minutes left us with too much to do. Despite some determined efforts from Colin Doyle, Mick Smith and Ger Doyle, we couldn’t close the gap.

Next game: Monday, 31 March, 6.30pm, away to Tullow.

Team: Paddy Byrne, Paul Hogan, Colin Doyle, Fergal Kavanagh, Ger Doyle, Mick Smith, Jordan Walsh, Pauric Lawlor, Paddy Gahan (0-1), Clive Lambe (0-2), Colin McGrath (0-1), Paul Byrne, Gary Byrne (0-1), J P Doyle (0-1), Mark A Byrne (0-1). Subs: John McGrath, Brian Kelly, Mark A Byrne.

In the All County League, the Intermediates received a walkover from Fenagh on Friday evening. Next game: Tuesday, 25 March, 8pm at home to O'Hanrahans.
