The 80-year-old will commentate on his last All-Ireland football final on Sunday when Down take on Cork.
O’Muircheartaigh made his RTE debut in 1949 with an Irish language commentary on the Railway Cup final.
He said: ‘I decided maybe the time to go is when you’re still enjoying it. I’ve been at it a long time – it’s been most enjoyable and a privilege.’
